GOOD MORNING, Washington gave the bond market some relief Wednesday, but not a clean policy signal. Treasury doubled the size of buybacks for long-dated bonds after the 30-year yield hit a 19-year high, pulling yields sharply lower and helping stabilize risk assets. Hours later, Fed minutes showed many policymakers still think another rate hike may be needed if inflation does not move back toward 2%. The result is an unusual tug-of-war: fiscal authorities are trying to calm long-term borrowing costs while monetary policy is still willing to tighten. Meanwhile, Google and Marvell added another twist to the AI-capex story by tying a massive stock warrant to future custom-chip purchases. MARKETS | TLDR
POLICY TUG-OF-WARTreasury Is Fighting the Long End. The Fed Is Still Fighting Inflation. The Treasury Department doubled planned liquidity-support buybacks for 10- to 30-year securities to at least $4 billion per operation after the 30-year yield hit 5.34%, its highest level since 2007. The announcement drove the long bond yield down by almost 10 basis points before it settled near 5.18%. Treasury said the larger purchases were designed to improve liquidity in markets where investors were offering significant amounts of older debt back to the government. The move matters because long-term yields have become a constraint on nearly every major market narrative. They raise the government's own interest bill, tighten mortgages and corporate financing, and increase the discount rate applied to growth stocks. But the size of the intervention is small relative to the market it is trying to influence: Treasury is adding at least $14 billion of extra buybacks this quarter against a Treasury market worth more than $32 trillion. The program can improve liquidity without changing the deficits, inflation risk or supply of new debt that pushed yields higher in the first place. The policy tension became clearer later Wednesday. Minutes from the Fed's July meeting showed that "many" policymakers thought a rate hike would be needed if inflation failed to move down toward 2%, while several had already been ready to tighten at that meeting. Treasury is trying to prevent disorderly pressure at the long end; the Fed is still willing to make short-term money more expensive. Markets now have to price both at once. CUSTOM SILICONGoogle Just Put $12 Billion Behind Marvell's AI RoadmapMarvell granted Google a warrant to buy nearly 59 million shares at $206.58 each, representing about $12.2 billion at the exercise price, as part of an expanded custom-silicon partnership. The agreement covers AI inference accelerators, storage controllers, network-interface chips, memory-interface controllers and near-memory compute tied to Google's TPU ecosystem. Marvell shares surged after the disclosure. The structure is more important than the headline value. Google is not simply placing a chip order; it is giving itself an equity-linked payoff if the partnership scales. That aligns the hyperscaler's economics with the supplier it needs to expand custom AI infrastructure and gives Marvell a potentially much larger revenue path if Google exercises the warrant as commercial milestones are met. It is another example of AI customers using strategic financing and ownership incentives to secure infrastructure capacity. The broader signal is that custom silicon is becoming a more important complement to merchant GPUs. Nvidia still dominates general-purpose AI acceleration, but hyperscalers increasingly want chips optimized for their own workloads, power budgets and economics. Google's deeper Marvell relationship therefore does not necessarily mean less AI spending. It means more of that spending may be distributed across specialized accelerators, networking and memory architecture — widening the set of companies that can participate in the buildout. HEADLINES

DEEP INSIGTHSFOMC Minutes — July 28-29, 2026The minutes are the best source for understanding why the Fed and Treasury can appear to be moving in opposite directions without actually contradicting each other. Treasury is addressing market liquidity and borrowing mechanics; Fed officials are focused on persistent inflation and were increasingly willing to discuss a more restrictive policy stance. Marvell's Google Warrant FilingThe filing shows exactly how the strategic relationship is structured. Google's warrant covers up to 58.97 million Marvell shares and is connected to a broad set of custom products around the TPU ecosystem, making it a useful primary-source example of how hyperscalers are tying supplier economics directly to future AI infrastructure deployment. |
